The judge, the lawyer, the prosecutor – these are the people who play the main role in a trial. It would seem that the defendant's fate depends on them. But that's not the case: there's someone "behind the scenes" without whom it's impossible to pass judgment. That person is the medical expert. It is their conclusion that often becomes decisive; it is on them that the outcome depends — whether the person will remain at large or end up behind bars.
